Frequently Asked Questions

How can I help?

Olympic and professional athletes have a unique voice to educate the global public about the Darfur crisis. We hope that you will take the time to visit the “Take Action” section of our web site and sign our online charter and leave your contact information. We will then contact you with more information on how you can help!

We also deeply appreciate the support of high school athletes, recreational athletes, and athletic fans - stay tuned as we approach the Olympics games in August. Please visit the “Take Action” section of our web site for more information on supporting Team Darfur athlete’s initiatives, buying Team Darfur gear, and attending Darfur events. Also, for more information on how you as an individual can advocate for Darfur please visit www.savedarfur.org.

Does Team Darfur support an Olympic boycott?

Team Darfur calls for a celebration of the Olympic spirit, not a boycott.

Team Darfur co-founder Joey Cheek was able to raise over one million dollars for children in Darfur in 2006 by donating his medal bonuses to relief in Darfur, and encouraging other athletes and sponsors to do the same. Joey also helped Darfur get much needed media attention when Darfur was rarely covered by the press. By attending the Olympics and speaking about Darfur, Joey was able to do much more for Darfur than he would have been able to by boycotting the games.

For more information on why Team Darfur does not support boycotts please read our No Boycott statement .

Why do you charge shipping and handling when purchasing between 1-4 sweatbands?

We would be losing money if we offered free shipping with a sweatband price of $3 each for orders under 5 pieces.

However, we like options over here at Team Darfur! You are more than welcome to purchase one, two, three or four sweatbands!

We didn't want it to be mandatory to buy in bulk, but we offer free shipping for bulk purchases (5+) in order to encourage buying in bulk. Give one to a friend, use it as a cat collar, hand it to a stranger. Let's raise some awareness!

So we don't lose money, purchases of less than 5 sweatbands will include a $2 shipping and handling fee. Expedited and international shipping are available, but will cost you a pretty penny.

How long will it take to receive my merchandise?

We ship items within one week of the date of purchase. Please allow up to 3 weeks for international shipments to arrive. Expedited shipping is available for an additional cost, please email info@teamdarfur.org for more information.

I would like to sponsor a youth sports team! Please help!

Email us at info@teamdarfur.org if you would like to sponsor a youth sports team.  We will work with you to outfit a sports team in your area with Team Darfur gear.  Let's spread awareness on sports fields, courts and arenas around the globe!

Do you accept food or clothing donations?

No, Team Darfur does not accept food or clothing.

Go to www.wfp.org if you wish to donate food.

As for clothing, consider donating sports clothing and equipment to the Global Gear Drive through the International Alliance of Youth Sports (IAYS) at www.iays.org/how_to_help.cfm

How do I make a donation to Team Darfur?

All donations are tax-deductible. To donate please go to www.teamdarfur.org/donate, or send checks to:

PO Box 34741
Washington DC
20043

Where do the funds you raise go?

The money we raise through donations and purchases will soon go to relief in Darfur. Currently, we are developing relationships with organizations that focus on sport and education in Darfur.

Where is the Team Darfur gear made? Are the conditions ethical?

We care about the ethical treatment of workers, and made this a priority when choosing our manufacturers.

Our Team Darfur track jackets and pants are made by American Apparel in downtown Los Angeles. The clothing costs are much higher than in other parts of the world, but we agree with the ethical standards of this company. Likewise, our sweatbands and headbands are made in an ethical factory in Taiwan.

Check back often because we're working to partner with a few sports designers in the near future to further our line of gear.

How much of my purchase or donation is going to help the people of Darfur?

At the moment Team Darfur is using our budget to expand our coalition of athletes, develop a video campaign and further design Team Darfur gear. This was made possible through grants and purchases early on.

Now that over 100 Olympic and Professional athletes have signed our charter, we are looking into possibly fundraising for on the ground relief in Darfur.
